- Changes in McSink V6.2a 9/25/88
- __________________________________________________
-
- Added: A new button to the Window Settings dialog - All Windows. This will apply
- the current window settings to all of McSink's windows (open or not.)
-
- Added: A new command to the Colors menu - Copy Colors To All Windows. This will
- copy the current window's colors to all of McSink's windows (open or not.)
-
- Added: A new button to the Find dialog called Special… This gives you a dialog
- that lets you easily specify special character sequences for the find or
- replace strings.
-
- Added: If McSink is opened with the Command and Shift keys down, then the main
- (first) window is hidden and won't be visible again until you close and
- re-open McSink.
-
- Removed: Ability to read MacWrite and WriteNow files from the shareware McSink
- version. The commercial Vantage version still has them. In addition,
- Vantage can now read normal Word 3.01 files (but not fast-save files
- yet.)
-
- Changed: Format of "Save changes?" alerts.
-
- Improved: Selections are now much smoother (not as "jerky"), although still not
- perfect. This may be the best I can do, however.
-
- Improved: Many unecessary window updates have been eliminated, again, giving a
- smoother look.
-
- Improved: The menu bar is no longer erased and then completely redrawn after a
- window is grown.
-
- Improved: Text drawing is now a little faster in all cases. Also, if on a color
- screen, and if text and/or highlight colors are black and white, then
- text drawing and/or highlighting is faster than it was.
-
- Improved: All dialogs and alerts are now centered (actually, a little higher
- than the center) on the current screen for the active window. (This does
- not apply yet to the system's print dialogs and the color picker
- dialog.)
-
- Improved: The Edit menu items are now enabled and disabled as appropriate. (For
- example, if nothing's selected, then cut, copy, and clear are disabled.)
-
- Changed: All of the dialog buttons have been put on a diet. (I kind of liked the
- fat ones, though.)
-
- Bug fix: Quitting with Cmd-. or Close from file menu no longer prevents
- applications from being launched afterwards. (McSink is no longer left
- locked in the heap.)
-
- Bug fix: If a new window is the main window and it has no filename associated
- with it, it no longer gets Saved as the filename it previously may have
- had.
-
- Bug fix: During a GoodBye, no longer asks to save a dirty file twice.
-
- Bug fix: Under Excel V1.5, if Open File on Open was checked, then Excel didn't
- redraw his menu bar after McSink was closed.
-
- Bug fix: Submenus now work under Excel V1.5 if running under MultiFinder and
- opened with the option key down.
-
- Bug fix: Wildcard chars are now included in the selection length of a found
- string.
-
- Bug fix: A window menu bar selection now stops on a mouse up.
-
- Bug fix/Change: Window zooming should now work as expected after a stack or tile
- windows command. (As a consequence of this, the stacking algorithm has
- been changed. Previously, stacked windows weren't resized. Now they are,
- so that none of the stacked window is off the screen.)
-
- Bug fix: Undo now remembers which window the undo text applies to, so that if
- you switch windows and then undo, the correct window is undone.
-
- Bug fix: When running in front of applications that have their own special
- SFGetFile or SFPutFile dialogs, McSink now no longer uses the special
- dialogs.
-
- Bug fix: A word wrap problem has been fixed. (Had to rewrite all of the word
- wrap code to do it, so be careful.) In addition, an unreported bug in
- Flush Right which would hang the system has been fixed. (Caused by
- having a line which has no spaces (tabs instead) separating the words in
- the line.)
-
- Bug fix: Changing the font or the size or the tabs setting now marks the window
- as dirty. (A style change does not, since style information isn't stored
- in the file as the font, size, and tab information is.)
-
- Bug fix: Paste statistics can now be undone.
-
- Bug fix: Revert is now disabled after a Save until the window becomes dirty
- again.
-
- Bug fix: If McSink was the first thing opened after a restart, and if you closed
- McSink immediately without doing anything, then the mouse and/or system
- would hang.
-
- Attempted bug fix: Added code to try and prevent the infamous 'moving garbage'
- problem/crash. Have no idea if this will fix it, as I have still been
- unable to duplicate it.

- _____________________________________________________________________
- A major change in McSink's distribution method.
- _____________________________________________________________________
-
- McSink V6.2 is now a subset of a commercial product called Vantage™, published
- by Preferred Software, Inc. McSink is, in effect, a demonstration version of
- Vantage™. In addition to all of the features you see in this release, Vantage™
- includes two new and exciting features: Spell Checking and Macros.
-
- There are a number of reasons why McSink has "gone commercial." Primarily, the
- change was made to reach a larger audience of possible customers. Secondarily,
- McSink's commercialization will offer a number of advantages to registered
- owners and would-be owners:
-
- 1.) It's now much easier to register - VISA and MC are accepted on a
- toll-free 800 number.
- 2.) Registrations can now be processed much quicker - all previous
- order processing was handled by one guy - me, the developer.
- Needless to say, this sometimes resulted in some delays.
- 3.) It's frees the developer (again, me) to concentrate on enhancing
- McSink, as opposed to handling the day-to-day administrative
- chores.
- 4.) Registered owners will now receive a more "professional" package,
- particularly an improved manual.
-
- The fact that Prefered Software has authorized this version of McSink to be
- uploaded to bulletin boards reflects their commitment to previous McSink owners
- as well as their belief in the shareware system. They have released several new
- commercial products in addition to Vantage™, and want you to support their
- efforts as they release quality software at affordable prices. If you find the
- new features in McSink worthwhile, I encourage you to register for either
- McSink or Vantage™ with Preferred Software. McSink in its shareware form will
- no longer be the focus of my energies - they will instead be directed towards
- Vantage™ and other planned products. Of course, McSink will continue to be
- supported by Preferred Software (and, indirectly, myself) as long as there is
- at least one registered owner.
-
- Along the same lines, documentation is no longer distributed with McSink. The
- manual has been eliminated because the publisher of Vantage™ realizes the need
- for an additional incentive for people to register the product, and also
- because, with the increased features of McSink, the manual is just getting too
- large to support and distribute. I have absolutely no problems with that,
- particularly as Vantage will surely be unique as a commercially distributed
- product. No other commercial publisher has shown the clear thinking required to
- allow such a substantial percentage of the functions of its product to be
- widely distributed on bulletin boards and time-sharing services. Obviously,
- they have a lot of faith in the "drawing power" of the restricted features and
- in the "good name" that McSink makes as it wends its way around the boards. I
- commend them for this faith. Let's make it work for them.
-
- Finally, I want to mention that I can't say enough about Preferred Software's
- wholehearted agreement to honor my committment to protect and support the
- currently registered owners of McSink. I feel a deep sense of obligation to
- those people who have registered McSink to date, and my new arrangement with
- Preferred Software satisfies that obligation very completely. (As you will see
- below, registered owners of previous versions of McSink will be able to update
- to the full commercial Vantage version for only $10.00, which includes a new
- manual. I think that's more than fair.)

-
- Registration and ordering information.
- _____________________________________________________________________
-
- You have the option of registering one of two versions: either McSink, or
- Vantage. The difference is that Vantage owners receive the "full" version,
- which includes the Spelling Checking and Macro functions. McSink registrants do
- not receive the Spelling Checking or Macro functions. You get a complete
- package regardless of which version you register: a master disk, and a complete
- manual (which includes documentation of the Spelling Checking and Macro
- functions). The registration fee for McSink is $30.00, and the registration fee
- for Vantage is $40.00 until Oct 1, 1988. After Oct. 1st, the registration fee
- for Vantage will be $89.95.
-
- You may order either version with a VISA or MasterCard purchase by calling
- (800) 446-6393. Use this number for orders only. Or, you may order by sending a
- check or money order for the appropriate amount to:
-
- Preferred Software, Inc.
- 5100 Poplar Ave., Suite 706
- Memphis, TN 38137
-
- If you need additional information, or require telephone support, you may reach
- Preferred Software at (901) 683-3383.
-
- Those people who register McSink and then later desire to update to Vantage may
- do so for $15.00.
-
- Those people who are already registered owners of previous versions of McSink
- may update to Vantage for $10.00.
